Arm Lift, also called Brachioplasty or Arm Tuck, is a procedure designed to remove redundant arm flab- also known as “Bat Wings,”. Loose upper arm skin folds are not only unsightly, but also interfere with one’s ability to fit in sleeved tops, as well as causing underarm skin rash and irritation. Candidates for Arm Lift surgery are often embarrassed by their large arms which they can’t hide.
The style of Arm Lift performed depends on the amount and location of your excess skin. In most cases the excess skin will be pulled up into the armpit, called Axillary Brachioplasty. For those whose excess skin extends from the armpit to the elbow, the only option is the complete removal of the arm flab. This scar is placed on the inner side of the arm, which is hidden in a normal pose.
Arm Lift Surgery is usually performed under general aneasthetic and usually takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. You will have to stay in the clinic over night.
Mr Ferrando will discuss all aspects of the Arm Lift procedure suitable to you at your consultations.
At the consultations, Mr Ferrando will take your medical history, thoroughly assess you, find out about your expectations of the surgery and will explain each stage of the Arm Lift procedure to you. He will carefully discuss all options suitable to you and answer any questions you may have. The exact procedure depends on the anatomy of the patient.
Clear communication about your aesthetic goals is vital at this stage. Mr Ferrando will also explain the risks of smoking, the contraceptive pill and other medications to you, as they can interfere with the procedure as well as the healing process.
Mr Ferrando strongly believes that “good communication and feedback” between himself and his patients assures a maximum satisfactory outcome of Cosmetic Surgery.
Incision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. In most cases incisions are placed hidden under the armpit in a “Y” shape. In more severe cases incisions have to be extended to the inside of the arm or on the back of the arm. The underlying supportive tissue will be tightened and reshaped with internal sutures. If fat is to be reduced during the Arm Lift procedure, it will be treated with Liposuction.
Finally, the skin is smoothed over the new contour of your arm.
After Surgery – Recovery
After the surgery, you may feel a little tender and sore. Mr Ferrando will provide you with pain relief medication to ease your discomfort. The drainage tubes will be removed before you leave the clinic but you may need to keep the dressing and compressive garment on for a few weeks.
Your stitches will be removed within a week or two after surgery. You may also wear a support garment around your upper arm, for few weeks, to reduce swelling and will need to take antibiotics to prevent infection.
Patients are recommended to have at least two weeks off work to allow time to rest and recover comfortably at home. Any exercise or heavy lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks after surgery.
You will need to attend follow up appointments after your surgery but if you have any questions or you feel unsure about anything, please contact Mr Ferrando and he will gladly talk to you. The well being of his patients is very important to him.
