Nipple & Areola Correction

Nipple & Areola Correction Surgery deals with Inverted and extended Nipples and Large or Puffy Areolas, which can occur naturally through genetics or develop through breast feeding.

The nipple and areola are an integral part of the breast, playing a role in appearance, sexuality and in motherhood. It can affect the way women feel about their body image resulting in embarrassment and low self esteem.

Fortunately, correcting nipple and areola problems require only a simple, outpatient procedure with beautifully proportioned results.

Mr Ferrando will discuss all aspects of nipple appearance, nipple projection and areola size as well as the procedure suitable to you at your consultation.

Inverted Nipple Correction

Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery is performed on nipples that have been inverted since birth or have become inverted due to breast feeding.

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, takes 1-2 hours and an overnight stay in the clinic is not required.

At your consultation, Mr Ferrando will determine the degree of the inversion. While some nipples may only be inverted some of the time, others are more severely inverted and never come out.

The procedure involves making a small incision at the top of the nipple, followed by a gentle spreading of the fibers within the nipple. Special care is taken to preserve the milk ducts in order to preserve them.

Once the nipple is free and in an outward, normal position, special stitches are placed inside the nipple. A third suture goes around the base of the nipple to add stability and strength to the base of the nipple and helps retain its outward position.

All stitches dissolve within 10 to 14 days and the initial incision will not be noticeable. Patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.

Extended Nipple Correction

Extended Nipple Correction Surgery is performed on nipples that have been extended since birth or have become longer due to breast feeding. Nipple Reduction can also be done in conjunction with Breast Enlargement, Breast Reduction and Breast Lift Surgery.

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, takes 1-2 hours and an overnight stay in the clinic is not required.

At your consultation, Mr Ferrando will ask you about the degree of reduction you would like to be achieved by the surgery and determine which part of the nipple needs to be reduced. Depending on the shape of the nipple this could be a reduction in length, width or both.

Length Reduction
To create a shorter nipple lengths, the tip of the nipple will be removed and stitched for closure. Sometimes the skin along the neck of the nipple is then sutured to the bottom of the nipple, creating a shorter nipple length.

Width Reduction
If the nipple is too wide, a small wedge will be removed from the undersurface of the nipple. This allows the nipple to be taken in for a narrower appearance.

Length and Width Reduction
For some women the nipples may be too wide and short. In this case, both procedures are performed.

All stitches dissolve within 10 to 14 days and the initial incision will not be noticeable. Patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.

Large Areola Correction

Large Areola Correction surgery is performed by removing some of the areola, either by an incision around the outside of the areola or by an incision around the base of the nipple. Very large areolas may require a lollypop-shaped closure. This is where a vertical incision runs down from the nipple as well as around the areola and then is closed in the shape of a lollypop.

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, takes 1-2 hours and an overnight stay in the clinic is not required.

At your consultation, Mr Ferrando will ask you about the degree of reduction and look of the areola you would like to be achieved by the surgery and determine which exact procedure is the right one for you.

All stitches dissolve within 10 to 14 days and minimal scarring can usually be achieved. Patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.

Puffy Areolas Correction

Puffy areolas are areolas that puff out when in a relaxed state. Procedures for “flattening out” puffy areolas are similar to those that reduce enlarged nipples.

The surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic, takes 1-2 hours and an overnight stay in the clinic is not required.

At your consultation, Mr Ferrando will ask you about the degree of reduction you would like to be achieved by the surgery and determine which exact procedure is the right one for you.

Puffy Areola Reduction Surgery involves removing some of the areola, either by an incision around the outside of the areola or by an incision around the base of the nipple, depending on the degree of puffiness. Once the incision is made, a small portion of the areola is removed and the areola skin is lifted, reducing the puffiness.

All stitches dissolve within 10 to 14 days and minimal scarring can usually be achieved. Patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.
